ABEJAS, 2026.
A contemplative, participatory, and wordless performance piece featuring large-scale puppets crafted from plant-based materials such as reed and handmade paper. Unfolding in public spaces, the work offers a sensory experience in which fragility, lightness, and collective movement create a visual poetics accessible to all audiences.
Through a swarm of bees animated by performers—and with community participation—the piece invites reflection on productivity, leisure, and individual identity within the collective.
The central question—"What do bees do besides work?"—serves as a metaphor for observing human behavior beyond the realm of duty, creating space for play, contemplation, and connection.
The performance structure does not follow a linear narrative but rather a score of physical actions that generate fragmented, evocative imagery. A percussive dancer—using *zapateado* footwork—articulates the transition between desire and obligation, underscoring the importance of individuality as a force that nourishes the community.
"Abejas" is an adaptable project that blends artistic creation, community engagement, and the poetic occupation of public space, transforming theater into a catalyst for recognizing uniqueness and activating the collective experience.
